Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday informed the Lok Sabha that the alleged harassment-linked suicide of a Punjab government official falls under the state’s jurisdiction.
However, he assured that the Centre is willing to facilitate a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry if the Punjab Members of Parliament submit a formal written request.
Addressing the House, HM Shah urged MPs from Punjab to present their demand in writing, stating that he would act promptly to initiate the transfer.
His remarks followed escalating political tensions surrounding the death of Gagandeep Singh Randhawa, District Manager at the Punjab State Warehousing Corporation.
The controversy intensified after the Punjab Police registered a case against former Transport Minister Laljit Singh Bhullar and two others.
Randhawa allegedly died by consuming poison at his residence in Amritsar. Before his death, he reportedly recorded a video accusing Bhullar of harassment and coercion.
Based on a complaint filed by his wife, Upinder Kaur, police also charged Bhullar’s father, Sukhdev Bhullar, and personal assistant Dilbagh Singh under provisions related to abetment of suicide, criminal intimidation, and common intention.
Union Minister Ravneet Singh Bittu welcomed Shah’s proposal and called it a constructive step. He noted that the Congress, Shiromani Akali Dal, and the Bharatiya Janata Party have collectively raised the issue, marking rare political unity. Bittu emphasised that all parties seek justice for the deceased.
He also paid tribute to Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev, and Rajguru on their martyrdom day and urged all Punjab MPs, including those from the Aam Aadmi Party, to support the demand.
The incident has triggered widespread political reaction, with Opposition leaders pressing for accountability and a comprehensive investigation.
