HM Amit Shah on Monday delivered a powerful cultural and political statement in Assam by inaugurating the Rs 227-crore redeveloped Batadrava Than, the birthplace of revered Vaishnavite saint Srimanta Sankardeva, in Nagaon district.
The event marked more than an infrastructure launch; it underscored the Centre’s determined push to blend heritage preservation with nation-building.
Addressing a massive public gathering at the historic site, HM Amit Shah asserted that the teachings of Srimanta Sankardeva continue to shape India’s cultural conscience.
He emphasised that the saint’s philosophy of harmony, inclusiveness and spiritual reform remains central to India’s unity in an era marked by social and ideological churn.
HM Amit Shah credited Sankardeva with forging Assam’s civilisational backbone and inspiring a cultural renaissance that transcended caste, creed and region.
Home Minister Amit Shah praised the people of Assam for safeguarding their traditions despite centuries of political upheaval and external pressures.
He said Sankardeva’s neo-Vaishnavite movement not only transformed Assamese society but also strengthened India’s broader spiritual fabric.
According to HM Amit Shah, cultural icons like Sankardeva form the moral compass of the nation and deserve institutional support and global recognition.
Traditional Welcome and Cultural Performances
Earlier in the day, HM Amit Shah arrived in Nagaon to a vibrant and traditional welcome. After landing at Borduwa by helicopter from Guwahati, HM Amit Shah witnessed colourful Assamese cultural performances that reflected the state’s deep-rooted artistic heritage.
Traditional Gayan-Bayan and Diha Naam presentations filled the air with devotional energy, visibly impressing HM Amit Shah, who applauded enthusiastically in rhythm with the performances.
Officials said the newly redeveloped Batadrava Than complex seamlessly blends spiritual sanctity with modern infrastructure.
The project aims to elevate the site into a premier spiritual and cultural destination, enhancing facilities for devotees while promoting religious tourism and cultural education across generations.
Following the inauguration, HM Amit Shah proceeded to Guwahati to pay homage at the Swahid Smarak Kshetra, honouring the martyrs of the Assam Movement who sacrificed their lives during the historic Anti-Foreigner Agitation.
The visit carried strong political symbolism, reaffirming the Centre’s recognition of Assam’s struggles and aspirations.
Later, HM Amit Shah inaugurated a series of high-value infrastructure projects in Guwahati, including the Rs 111-crore Guwahati Police Commissionerate building and the Rs 189-crore Integrated Command and Control System, both aimed at modernising urban policing and strengthening public safety.
HM Amit Shah also unveiled the Rs 291-crore Jyoti Bishnu Cultural Complex, a state-of-the-art auditorium with a seating capacity of 5,000, poised to become a cultural powerhouse in the Northeast.
