Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday strongly criticised the Congress, accusing the party of enabling illegal infiltration in Assam when it governed the state.
Speaking at the Yuva Shakti Samaroha held in Guwahati, he said the BJP government is committed to eliminating the problem of illegal immigration.
HM Shah stated that tea tribes and Adivasi communities were largely neglected during the Congress administration. He said the BJP government has taken several steps to support these communities through targeted welfare schemes.
According to him, tea garden labourers have been given financial assistance of Rs 5,000, and nearly 3.5 lakh families living in 707 tea gardens have received land rights.
The Home Minister alleged, “The Congress governments had turned Assam into a shelter for infiltrators. We had promised that Assam would be freed from infiltrators, and under the leadership of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, around 1.51 lakh bighas of land have been cleared from encroachers.”
HM Shah also targeted Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for opposing the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
He claimed, “Rahul Gandhi is opposing SIR because the names of infiltrators are being removed from the electoral rolls. This is only the beginning — every infiltrator will eventually have to leave the country.”
Peace Initiatives and Security Measures
The Union Home Minister remarked that Assam previously experienced serious insurgency-related violence during the Congress period.
He said the current government has worked to establish stability by signing several peace agreements with militant groups.
These include the Bodo Peace Accord in 2020 and additional agreements with Karbi, Adivasi, DNLA and ULFA groups between 2021 and 2024. HM Shah noted that more than 10,800 weapons have been surrendered following these accords.
HM Shah said the presence of nearly 1.25 lakh youths at the event reflected strong support for the BJP.
He also stated that the state government has provided around 1.65 lakh jobs to young people. He added that the recruitment process was carried out transparently without corruption or legal disputes.
HM Shah expressed confidence that the BJP will return to power in Assam. He predicted that the party would secure its largest-ever mandate in the forthcoming Assembly elections.
