PM Modi Leads Nation In Grief As Tripura Speaker Biswa Bandhu Sen Passes Away At 72

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday led the nation in mourning the death of Biswa Bandhu Sen, Speaker of the Tripura Legislative Assembly and a four-time MLA, who passed away after a prolonged illness.

Taking to X, the Prime Minister shared a photograph with Sen from Agartala and wrote, “Pained by the passing of Shri Biswa Bandhu Sen Ji, Speaker of the Tripura Assembly. He will be remembered for his efforts to boost Tripura’s progress and commitment to numerous social causes. My thoughts are with his family and admirers in this sad hour. Om Shanti.”

Life and Legacy of a Veteran Leader

Biswa Bandhu Sen, 72, had been undergoing advanced medical treatment at a private hospital in Bengaluru for over four months. His death prompted tributes from across party lines, reflecting his stature as a seasoned legislator, a consensus builder, and a calm presiding authority in the Assembly.

Beginning his political career with the Congress before later joining the BJP, Sen represented the Dharmanagar constituency four times, winning twice on a Congress ticket and twice as a BJP nominee. His long legislative journey and measured leadership style earned him wide respect across the political spectrum.

Sen suffered an internal brain haemorrhage on August 8 at the Agartala railway station, where he collapsed while preparing to travel to Dharmanagar.

Doctors initially treated him in Agartala before shifting him to Bengaluru for specialised care following consultations with AIIMS specialists.

His son, Arijit Sen, himself a doctor, had earlier acknowledged the support extended by the Tripura government during the initial stages of treatment.

Tripura Announces State Mourning and Full Honours

Following his demise, the Tripura government announced three days of state mourning from December 26 to 28.

The National Flag will fly at half-mast across the state, and all official entertainment programmes will remain suspended during this period.

The government also declared a public holiday on Friday, shutting all state offices, public sector undertakings, and educational institutions, including those located outside Tripura.

Officials confirmed that the state will accord Biswa Bandhu Sen a full state funeral on Saturday, marking a final tribute to a leader whose contributions left a lasting imprint on Tripura’s political life.
