Following a remarkable hat-trick of electoral victories, Haryana’s caretaker Chief Minister, Nayab Singh Saini, may be set to continue in his role. Under his leadership, the BJP successfully navigated a challenging political landscape, overcoming a decade of anti-incumbency.
Meetings in the National Capital
On Wednesday, Saini arrived in Delhi and met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi at his residence. Accompanied by Haryana BJP President Mohan Lal Badoli, he will also consult with key party leaders, including Union Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP President JP Nadda. These discussions aim to finalize plans for a swearing-in ceremony on Dussehra, which falls on October 12.
A Landslide Victory
The BJP achieved a significant electoral victory, securing 48 out of 90 seats in the Assembly. In contrast, the Congress party finished as the second-largest faction with 37 seats, while the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) won only two.

Additionally, independent candidates claimed three seats, and both the Jannayak Janata Party (JJP) and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) failed to win any seats.
Internal Party Dynamics
To solidify its leadership, the BJP Legislature Party will meet on Thursday to elect a new leader. Many consider Saini, 54, a non-Jat from the Other Backward Classes (OBC) community, the frontrunner for the Chief Minister position. He assumed office in March, just two months before the Lok Sabha elections, succeeding veteran leader Manohar Lal Khattar.
Saini’s Electoral Performance
In the recent elections, Saini secured the Ladwa Assembly seat with a margin of 16,054 votes over Congress candidate Mewa Singh. His appointment as caretaker Chief Minister was a strategic move to counter the anti-incumbency sentiment surrounding Khattar’s nearly ten-year tenure. During his brief time in office, Saini claimed to have enacted significant developmental policies, asserting that he made more progress in 56 days than Khattar did in ten years.
Looking Ahead
Having entered politics nearly 30 years ago, Saini was first elected as an MLA from Naraingarh in 2014 and later joined the Cabinet in 2016. Although he expressed interest in contesting from Karnal, the BJP leadership chose Ladwa as a safer option due to the party’s strong performance in recent elections.
Despite some internal competition, particularly from senior leader Anil Vij, party in-charge Dharmendra Pradhan has publicly backed Saini. He emphasized that the BJP aims to maintain its winning streak under Saini’s leadership, positioning him as the party’s chief ministerial candidate for the next term.
