Gujarat’s ‘Mission Schools of Excellence’ has become the country’s most ambitious school education initiative, with the state completing a significant number of infrastructure targets aimed at modernising learning environments across public schools.
Launched in 2022 under the joint leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, the mission aims to upgrade nearly 40,000 government and grant-in-aid schools.
As of now, the Gujarat government has constructed 13,353 new classrooms and modernised another 27,872, with construction ongoing for 31,469 new classrooms and upgrades to 63,860 existing ones.
The initiative envisions the creation of 50,000 new classrooms in total.
These efforts are part of a larger goal to ensure robust academic environments that are conducive to effective teaching and learning.
To integrate technology into everyday teaching, Mission Schools of Excellence has introduced over 1.09 lakh smart classrooms, with work underway on an additional 26,000 units.
The campaign also includes the development of 21,000 new computer labs, while the process of equipping another 18,000 schools with similar labs is currently in progress.
This technological push is seen as a crucial step in further preparing students for a digital future.
Gujarat has constructed 5,000 new STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) labs to strengthen science and technology learning.
These facilities will help cultivate scientific curiosity and innovation among students, laying a strong foundation for India’s future scientific workforce.
The Government of Gujarat has allocated ₹12,000 crore for the mission.
Additionally, the World Bank has extended financial support worth $750 million, making it one of the largest education investments in India.
The state’s long-term investment in school infrastructure over the past 22 years has led to significant improvements in enrolment and retention rates.
Mission Schools of Excellence focuses on comprehensive school development, including civil infrastructure, smart learning tools, online assessments, remedial instruction, and co-curricular facilities.
It aims to benefit nearly one crore students across primary, secondary, and higher secondary levels, ultimately strengthening the state’s primary education foundation.
With its scalable and inclusive approach, Gujarat’s Mission Schools of Excellence set a precedent for educational reform across India.
As implementation progresses, the programme is expected to create a lasting impact on learning outcomes and bridge the digital divide in public education.
