Gujarat Contributes One-Fifth Of India’s Renewable Energy Capacity, Says PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said Gujarat has become a key pillar of India’s energy transition. He highlighted the state’s significant contribution to renewable power generation and its future role in green hydrogen, green ammonia and green steel production.

Addressing a gathering in Surat on World Environment Day, the Prime Minister said Gujarat was strengthening India’s long-term energy security framework. He noted that the state currently contributes one-fifth of the country’s renewable energy capacity.

“Today, India’s renewable energy capacity is 250 gigawatts. Out of this, Gujarat alone contributes 50 gigawatts. In other words, one-fifth of the country’s green energy is produced by Gujarat,” he said.

The Prime Minister compared the current scenario with the situation twelve years ago. He said solar power generation in India was almost insignificant at that time.

“Twelve years ago, solar energy production in India was negligible. Today, we are among the top five countries in the world,” he said.

Prime Minister Modi said recent global challenges, including the Covid-19 pandemic, geopolitical tensions and volatility in energy markets, had underscored the need for domestic energy production. He said fluctuations in fuel prices and disruptions in gas supply chains had prompted India to diversify energy sources while accelerating investments in renewable infrastructure.

“Petrol prices have been fluctuating continuously. Gas supply chains are collapsing,” he said.

The Prime Minister highlighted several initiatives undertaken during the past decade. These included solar energy expansion, railway electrification, ethanol blending, nuclear power development, transmission network modernisation and gas pipeline growth.

PM Modi also recalled Gujarat’s pioneering role in climate action. He noted that the state established a dedicated Climate Change Department more than two decades ago and developed the country’s first major solar park at Charanka in Patan district.

Looking ahead, the Prime Minister said Surat and the Hazira industrial belt would spearhead industrial decarbonisation. He added that Hazira would emerge as a hub for green steel manufacturing powered by renewable energy.

The Prime Minister also praised Surat’s wastewater recycling model and electric mobility initiatives. He said these efforts demonstrated how cities could pursue environmental objectives while sustaining economic expansion.

PM Modi concluded by saying that India’s development strategy increasingly followed the principle of balancing economic progress with ecological responsibility, describing it as ‘development alongside nature’.
