Prime Minister Narendra Modi, addressing a packed gathering in Rajasthan’s Banswara, drew sharp contrasts between the Congress-led governments of the past and the current BJP administration.
He accused the Congress of ‘looting’ the people through excessive taxation and unchecked inflation, saying that prior to 2014, citizens faced unnecessary hardships.
“Why were conditions so bad then? Because the Congress government was looting people with high taxes and inflation. Both were at their peak. When you blessed PM Modi, our government stopped this loot. That is why Congress is angry with me today,” he told the crowd.
The Prime Minister explained that under Congress rule, a Rs 100 item effectively costs Rs 131 after taxes.
With the introduction of GST in 2017, the same item’s price fell to Rs 118. Following subsequent reforms, the current price is Rs 105—a saving of Rs 26 compared with the Congress era.
To make the comparison relatable, he cited everyday examples. A pair of shoes worth Rs 500 once carried Rs 75 in taxes, making the final price Rs 575.
Today, buyers pay Rs 50 less tax on the same shoes. Moreover, GST slabs have been removed on footwear priced up to Rs 500, and rates have been reduced for shoes up to Rs 2,500.
PM Modi further spoke about the cost of two-wheelers, a common aspiration for many families.
“Earlier, under Congress, a bike worth Rs 60,000 carried a tax burden of Rs 19,000. In 2017, GST reduced this burden by Rs 2,000 to 2,500. After reforms in September 2022, the tax is now only Rs 10,000. This means a saving of Rs 9,000 compared with the pre-2014 era,” he said.
He added that these reforms have eased household expenses, particularly for women. “On the first day of Navratri, this reform has given mothers and sisters across India a reason to celebrate. Savings may look small individually, but across crores of families, they mean a lot,” the Prime Minister remarked.
Alongside his economic message, PM Modi inaugurated and laid foundation stones for projects worth over Rs 1 lakh crore, aimed at strengthening infrastructure and welfare across Rajasthan.
The development push, coupled with his sharp attack on Congress’s policies, drew strong applause from the crowd.
PM Modi’s address in Banswara blended policy explanation with political critique, portraying GST reforms as a direct boon for citizens while positioning the Congress as responsible for past economic burdens.
By combining his ‘GST Savings Festival’ message with the launch of new projects, PM Modi sought to project both relief for households and a roadmap for continued growth in Rajasthan and beyond.
