Govt Says No Decision Yet On Sending Black Boxes Of Air India’s Crashed Plane Abroad For Decoding

The Ministry of Civil Aviation on Thursday said it has not yet decided to send the cockpit voice recorder (CVR) or the digital flight data recorder (DFDR) of the crashed AI171 flight abroad for analysis.

Some media reports claimed that the CVR/DFDR from the Air India crash would be sent overseas. The Ministry rejected this, stating that the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) will decide the decoding location after assessing technical, safety, and security concerns.

The Ministry urged all stakeholders not to speculate. “Let the investigation proceed with the seriousness and professionalism it deserves,” the statement said.

The investigation team recovered the first combined unit of the CVR and DFDR on June 13, a day after the crash. They found another set on June 16. This aircraft model includes two black box sets, the statement added.

The AAIB is leading the probe into the June 12 Air India crash, with help from local authorities. Officials have completed site documentation and evidence collection. Further analysis is now underway, the Ministry said.

Global teams Join the investigation

The Director General of AAIB ordered the inquiry. A multi-disciplinary team is handling the investigation. Teams from the US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the aircraft’s original equipment manufacturers (OEM) have joined, following ICAO rules.

The Ministry promised transparency during the investigation. It said all steps will follow set protocols to protect passenger safety.

The statement called for teamwork and quick coordination. The Ministry said these values support public trust and operational stability in Indian aviation.

The Government reaffirmed its commitment to the highest standards of safety. It said passenger safety and comfort remain its top priority.
