India-UK FTA Paves Way For Actionable Cooperation In Trade, Technology: Piyush Goyal

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Thursday reaffirmed India’s push to convert the India–UK FTA into a powerful economic partnership. The Ministry of Commerce and Industry issued the official statement.

Goyal spoke at the India Global Forum (IGF) 2025 in London. His visit followed the historic signing of the India–UK Free Trade Agreement in May 2025.

He delivered the keynote address and described the FTA as a symbol of shared ambition between two vibrant democracies. He said the agreement boosts trade and shows India’s strength in building fair and forward-looking trade frameworks.

UK Secretary of State for Business and Trade Jonathan Reynolds joined Goyal during the event. International journalist Mark Barton moderated the discussion.

India eyes early gains and skilled mobility

Goyal outlined the next phase of the India–UK FTA rollout. He stressed the need to build strong governance structures. He also prioritised unlocking early benefits for startups and small businesses.

Additionally, Goyal highlighted the importance of easing skilled workforce mobility across industries. He said smooth movement of talent will drive long-term value for both economies.

India invites UK to join tech-driven growth

On 19 June, Goyal spoke at a special session on UK–India science and technology at London’s Science Museum. He invited UK firms to engage in India’s digital and green infrastructure growth.

Moreover, Goyal said India aims to become a global manufacturing hub. He pointed to Make in India and PLI schemes as key enablers.

He pushed for deeper ties in fintech, AI, and creative industries. He also urged both nations to scale Indian innovations like UPI and CoWIN globally.

The Minister added that the FTA will strengthen defence production and cooperation in advanced technologies.

“Through the India–UK FTA, both countries can open new paths in trade, services, and innovation,” the ministry stated.
