The Union government on Wednesday reassured opposition leaders that additional Indian vessels will navigate the Strait of Hormuz, stressing there is no immediate cause for alarm.
Officials conveyed this during an all-party meeting convened to deliberate on the evolving West Asia crisis and its implications.
Authorities affirmed that India maintains a firm grip on the geopolitical situation and possesses sufficient energy reserves to ensure stability. They outlined ongoing measures to mitigate disruptions arising from the Iran conflict, particularly in fuel logistics and maritime movement.
Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju stated that the government addressed queries comprehensively and provided detailed clarifications on petroleum and gas supplies. He noted that India has already secured four vessels, easing concerns over transit through the crucial corridor.
Rijiju further highlighted that opposition parties demonstrated unity, expressing willingness to support government decisions during this challenging phase. He emphasised that most participants found the briefing satisfactory.
The high-level meeting included key members of the Cabinet Committee on Security, such as Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Home Minister Amit Shah, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.
Leaders from multiple parties, including Congress, Samajwadi Party, Biju Janata Dal, CPI(M), and AAP, also attended. Congress leader Tariq Anwar termed the discussion inadequate, reiterating the demand for a formal parliamentary debate.
CPI(M) MP John Brittas acknowledged ongoing diplomatic engagement, while AAP MP Sanjay Singh raised concerns about public anxiety over fuel access.
The government maintained that domestic LPG production meets nearly 60 per cent of demand and adequate oil reserves remain available.
