A political storm is brewing in Goa as the BJP-led government faces strong criticism for the controversial allotment of 3.33 lakh square meters of farmland in Dhargal, Pernem.
The land, officially CADA-notified and intended for agricultural use, has been allocated to Delta Corp Ltd for an ‘Integrated Resort Development Project’, which includes casino operations.
Opposition Leader Yuri Alemao has launched a scathing attack on Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and the BJP government, calling the move a ‘betrayal of farmers’ and a classic example of ‘crony capitalism’.
Alemao criticised the irony of a government that promised to double farmers’ incomes while now taking away agricultural land for corporate interests.
“The BJP has already turned Panaji into a sin city. Now, they are targeting serene villages like Dhargal and threatening to ruin them with the casino culture,” Alemao said.
He argued that the allocation violated the original purpose of CADA land, reserved for agricultural use, and demanded an immediate rollback.
Alemao’s condemnation quickly gained traction on social media, where he called on Goans to resist the ‘menace of selling public land to corporate interests’.
He specifically pointed fingers at casino operators, referring to them as ‘crony capitalists’ who prioritise profit over Goa’s agrarian and cultural integrity.
This controversial move has raised serious questions about the Goa government’s priorities.
Critics argue that the Sawant administration seems more focused on serving corporate interests, particularly the casino industry, than addressing the concerns of farmers and local communities.
As tensions rise, public anger continues to grow, with many questioning whether the government is truly serving the people of Goa or simply bowing to powerful corporate lobbyists.
As the controversy intensifies, the pressure is mounting on Chief Minister Pramod Sawant to justify this contentious land allocation.
His government now faces demands for transparency regarding the long-term implications of this decision and its impact on Goa’s agricultural and cultural heritage.
With public anger swelling, Sawant will need to carefully navigate the political storm and address the growing concerns of both farmers and local residents.
