Kajari Mahotsav 2026 was held at Sharada Gyanpeeth International School in Malad East, Mumbai, on 22 August, bringing the rich cultural traditions of Purvanchal to the city.
Organised jointly by Bharat Express News Channel and Bhumihar Jagran Manch, the event celebrated folk music, Sawan traditions and the community’s connection with its cultural roots.
Ahead of the programme, Bharat Express Chairman, Managing Director (CMD) and Editor-in-Chief Upendrra Rai and Padma Shri folk singer Malini Awasthi spoke to journalists about Sawan, folk traditions and their personal connection with their native culture.
CMD Upendrra Rai said the scale of an event matters less than the message it conveys.
Recalling his journey from Sherpur village in Ghazipur to Lucknow and eventually Mumbai in December 1999, Bharat Express CMD spoke about experiencing the differences between village and urban life. He described Sawan as a month of music, prosperity and a deep connection between nature and people.
According to CMD Upendrra Rai, the rains transform the landscape, while cultural celebrations allow communities living in metropolitan cities such as Mumbai to preserve the essence of their native traditions.
Malini Awasthi praised the North Indian community in Mumbai for keeping its cultural traditions alive. She said the community had planted its cultural roots in the city and was helping its fragrance reach wider audiences.
Awasthi highlighted the significance of Sawan for artists and cultural traditions. She said the month provides inspiration and creative energy for the entire year. She further called performing Kajari, Jhoola and Malhar during Sawan a privilege.
The festival celebrated Purvanchal’s folk traditions and the importance of preserving cultural roots in Mumbai.
