Prime Minister's Museum and Library (PMML) previously known as Nehru Memorial Museum and Library (NMML)
The transformation of Nehru Memorial Museum and Library (NMML) into the Prime Minister’s Museum and Library (PMML) Society has been officially declared by the Centre, taking effect from Monday.
In a confirmation provided by PMML vice-chairman A Surya Prakash on X, previously known as Twitter, the change was affirmed.
“Nehru Memorial Museum and Library (NMML) is now Prime Ministers Museum and Library (PMML) Society w.e.f August 14, 2023 – in tune with the democratisation and diversification of the remit of the society. Happy Independence Day! @narendramodi, @rajnathsingh @MinOfCultureGoI,” Prakash shared.
During a significant assembly of the NMML Society in mid-June, a resolution was unanimously passed to transition the society’s identity to the PMML Society.

Previously known as the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library Society, the Culture Ministry had expressed its decision to alter the nomenclature.
This resolution was enacted during a special gathering of the Memorial Museum and Library Society, overseen by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, who holds the position of Vice-President within the Society.
This substantial transformation was granted approval by the Executive Council of NMML during its 162nd assembly in November 2016.
The Pradhanmantri Sangrahalaya, also known as the Prime Ministers’ Museum, was inaugurated for public access on April 21 of the previous year.
Significantly, despite being invited by the government, no member of the Nehru-Gandhi family was present during the inauguration.
The connection between the NMML and India’s illustrious Nehru-Gandhi lineage, with three members—Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, and Rajiv Gandhi—having served as Prime Ministers, stands noteworthy.

The Museum project exhibits a seamless amalgamation, commencing from the revitalised Nehru Museum building, now featuring technologically advanced displays focusing on the life and contributions of Jawaharlal Nehru.
Situated within a new structure, the museum proceeds to narrate the journey of the nation’s Prime Ministers as they steered the country through diverse challenges, ensuring holistic advancement.
The initiative acknowledges the role of all Prime Ministers, thereby enriching the institutional legacy.
