From Jantar Mantar To Safdarjung: Why Sonam Wangchuk Refuses To End His Fast

Educator and innovator Sonam Wangchuk has been on an indefinite hunger strike in New Delhi since June 28, 2026, demanding accountability over the alleged examination paper leaks and reforms to India’s education system. He says the protest is not political; rather, its goal is to protect the future of students and strengthen democratic institutions.

The campaign began after widespread concerns over irregularities in national competitive examinations, particularly the NEET paper leak controversy.

Wangchuk and student groups have demanded the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, greater transparency in recruitment and entrance examinations, strict action against those responsible for paper leaks, and comprehensive reforms to ensure a fair and credible education system.

As the hunger strike continued, doctors repeatedly warned that his health was deteriorating.

Reports indicated significant weight loss, physical weakness and other complications associated with prolonged fasting.

On July 18, authorities shifted Wangchuk from Jantar Mantar to Safdarjung Hospital after his condition worsened. His supporters criticised the move, alleging that he was taken to the hospital against his will, while officials said the transfer was necessary to provide medical care.

From the hospital, Wangchuk released a handwritten letter stating that he would end his fast if the government accepted responsibility for failures in the education system. He also said he would end the protest if Parliament took up the issue through assurances from MPs or if political leaders visited him in the hospital and publicly committed to addressing the issue should his health deteriorate further.

Supporters organised a ‘Chalo Sansad’ march towards Parliament during the Monsoon Session, demanding education reforms despite restrictions on public gatherings in Delhi.
