The Maldivian president hailed the trip as ‘a defining visit that sets a clear path for the future of Maldives–India relations’.
The visit coincided with the 60th Independence Day celebrations of the Maldives, where PM Modi served as the guest of honour.
Extensive discussions covered economic, maritime, and security cooperation, while PM Modi also engaged with opposition leaders, business communities, and the Indian diaspora.
India extended a new Line of Credit worth ₹4,850 crore, eased repayment terms on previous loans, and agreed to launch Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations.
Six development projects, including social housing and community initiatives, were inaugurated.
Agreements covered areas such as fisheries, aquaculture, digital solutions, and pharmaceuticals, reinforcing economic and developmental collaboration.
Strategic Significance
This visit reflects New Delhi’s patience and long-term vision in South Asia. It strengthens India’s leadership position in the region alongside partnerships with Sri Lanka, Nepal, and Bhutan, even as challenges remain with Bangladesh and Pakistan.
The Maldives, positioned strategically in the Indian Ocean, plays a vital role in India’s maritime security architecture and Vision MAHASAGAR.
The PM Modi–Muizzu meeting demonstrated that dialogue and mutual respect can rebuild bilateral relations despite past tensions.
