Manohar Joshi, the former chief minister of Maharashtra, passed away at the age of eighty six in a Mumbai hospital on Friday. It was two days after he got cardiac arrest. Later in the day, Mr. Joshi’s funeral will take place at Mumbai’s Shivaji Park Crematorium. On Wednesday, Mr. Joshi was admitted to Mumbai’s PD Hinduja Hospital.
“Manohar Joshi, Ex-Chief Minister of Maharashtra, was admitted at PD Hinduja Hospital on 21st February 2024. He suffered a cardiac event and is severely ill. He is currently in the ICU under close observation and receiving best of medical care,” the hospital said in a statement on Thursday.
From 1995 until 1999, he led Maharashtra as chief minister, becoming the first member of the Shiv Sena to hold the position after it was split. In addition to being elected as a member of parliament, Manohar Joshi served as speaker of the Lok Sabha between 2002 and 2004. Mr. Joshi did his schooling from Mumbai after being born on December 2, 1937, in Nandvi, in the Raigad district of Maharashtra. Anagha Manohar Joshi, his wife, passed away in 2020 at the age of 75. Two girls and a son survive him.

Manohar Joshi started out as a teacher before going into politics in 1967. He spent more than 40 years as Shiv Sena’s employee. Mr. Joshi served as Mumbai’s Municipal Councilor from 1968 to 1970 and as the Standing Committee (Municipal Corporation) Chairman in 1970.
In addition, he was Mumbai’s mayor from 1976 to 1977 for a year. 1972, he was chosen to serve in the Maharashtra Legislative Council. In 1990, Mr. Joshi was elected to the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly following three terms of service in the Legislative Council.
In the Maharashtra Assembly, he also held the office of Leader of the Opposition from 1990 to 1991. On a Shiv Sena ticket, he won the 1999 General Elections representing the Mumbai North-Central Lok Sabha Constituency.
