Former J&K Governor Satya Pal Malik Passes Away At 79

Former Jammu & Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik passed away on Tuesday at the age of 79. He died at approximately 1 PM at Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) Hospital in New Delhi, where he was undergoing treatment for a prolonged illness.

The news of his demise was confirmed through a post on his official X (formerly Twitter) account.

Malik had been receiving dialysis due to kidney failure caused by a severe urinary tract infection. He had been under intensive medical care in recent months, with his health gradually deteriorating.

His death comes as the nation observes the sixth anniversary of the abrogation of Article 370—a pivotal moment during his tenure as J&K Governor.

A Long Political Journey

Satya Pal Malik began his political career in the early 1970s as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Baghpat, Uttar Pradesh.

Over the next five decades, he shifted across several political parties and held a range of legislative and administrative roles. He completed two terms in the Rajya Sabha between 1980 and 1992 and won the Lok Sabha election from Aligarh in 1989.

His political affiliations included the Bharatiya Kranti Dal, Janata Dal, and later, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Despite switching parties over the years, Malik remained an outspoken figure, often unafraid to voice his opinions, even when they contradicted the views of his own party.

Malik held gubernatorial positions in multiple states, beginning with Bihar, followed by Jammu & Kashmir, Goa, and Meghalaya. His most prominent role came as the last Governor of the erstwhile state of Jammu & Kashmir from August 2018 to October 2019.

During this time, the Government of India revoked Article 370 on 5 August 2019, removing the special status accorded to the region and bifurcating it into two Union Territories—J&K and Ladakh.

He took over as the Governor of Goa in November 2019 and later served as the Governor of Meghalaya until October 2022.

As Governor of Meghalaya, Malik continued to make headlines with bold remarks and critiques of national policies.

An Outspoken Statesman

Even during his gubernatorial roles, Malik remained a candid and often controversial voice. He openly criticised the government’s handling of certain issues, including the farmers’ protest, corruption, and bureaucratic inefficiencies.

His statements frequently sparked debate, reflecting his independent stance and willingness to challenge authority.

Despite the criticism he attracted, many praised his integrity and fearlessness in public office.

Malik’s political career was marked by resilience, adaptability, and a deep engagement with the nation’s political landscape.

He witnessed and influenced several key transitions in Indian governance, including the controversial yet landmark decision surrounding Article 370.

His passing marks the end of an era, with leaders across the political spectrum offering condolences and remembering his contributions to the country.

The nation mourns a leader who remained active in public life until the very end and leaves behind a legacy of service, candour, and political courage.
