In a key briefing to the Parliamentary Standing Committee on External Affairs, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri confirmed that Pakistan did not engage in nuclear signalling during the recent standoff after Operation Sindoor, according to sources familiar with the matter.
The committee, chaired by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, met on Monday to assess the military and diplomatic consequences of Operation Sindoor. The operation was India’s direct response to the Pahalgam terror attack, which triggered a sharp rise in tensions with Pakistan.
Sources said Misri addressed a wide range of issues, including cross-border threats, military preparedness, and India’s regional diplomatic strategy. Officials closely monitored for any signs of nuclear escalation, but Misri assured the panel that no such signals came from Islamabad.
India launched Operation Sindoor after the Pahalgam terror strike, which claimed multiple lives and received condemnation from all political quarters. The operation targeted terror camps in Pakistan-occupied territories and led to several days of military tension.
Despite the high-risk environment, the situation de-escalated after both countries reportedly agreed to stop hostilities by 10 May. Calm has since returned to the Line of Control, although the underlying issues remain unresolved.
During the closed-door session, Misri discussed how India is adjusting its foreign policy in response to changing regional dynamics. He highlighted India’s current approach to Pakistan and efforts to maintain stability in South Asia.
The briefing also covered India’s diplomatic engagement with neighbours like Bangladesh and challenges with countries such as Canada. Misri provided a broader view of regional alignments and India’s position on multilateral issues.
Misri has briefed the committee on sensitive matters before. His presentations form part of the government’s commitment to ensuring parliamentary oversight on national security and foreign affairs.
The session reaffirmed that Operation Sindoor, while decisive, did not cross the threshold of nuclear escalation—an outcome viewed as critical for regional peace.
