Flood Devastation In Assam: Death Toll Rises To 46, Over 15 Lakh Affected

The flood situation in Assam has worsened with eight new deaths reported, bringing the total toll to 46, according to an official on Wednesday. Flood affect over 15 lakh people so far.

The official from Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) reported that on Wednesday, two fatalities occurred in Sonitpur district, with one each in Dibrugarh, Darrang, Golaghat, Biswanath, Tinsukia, and Morigaon districts.

ASDMA officials also confirmed that the floods have submerged over 39,451 hectares of crop areas across 2,800 villages. Additionally, affects more than 11.20 lakh domestic animals.

Major rivers including the Brahmaputra, Barak, and their tributaries are flowing above the danger level at several points. The floods have damaged 74 roads, 14 embankments, and 6 bridges.

To assist those affected, the state government has set up 515 relief camps accommodating around 26,000 people, with 359 more relief distribution centers operational in various districts. Multiple teams from national and state disaster response forces deploye for rescue and relief operations.

Flood Situation

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma conducted a review of the flood situation at Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve on Tuesday. Sarma also visited the flood-hit Golaghat district and highlighted the efforts of several battalions from NDRF and SDRF in managing the crisis. He mentioned the assistance provided by the Indian Air Force and outlined plans for damage assessment and relief distribution by August 15.

“To carry out this exercise, ministers will fan out in different districts and camp for three days. I will go to Barak Valley for a couple of days. In September-October, we will be able to allocate funds for the damaged infrastructure and get the same repaired by March next year,” Sarma stated.
