A major road accident near Jamuniya village in Jharkhand’s Deoghar district claimed the lives of 5 Kanwariyas and left several injured on Tuesday, casting a shadow over the ongoing Shravani Mela pilgrimage.
Thousands of devotees travel during this time to offer holy water at the Baba Baidyanath Dham temple.
The accident took place in Mohanpur block, near the north-flowing Jamuniya River and a well-known Shiva-Parvati temple.
Confirming the incident, Deoghar MP Nishikant Dubey posted, “In my Lok Sabha constituency of Deoghar, during the Kanwar Yatra in the month of Shravan, 18 devotees lost their lives due to a bus and truck accident. May Baba Baidyanath Ji grant strength to their families to bear this grief.”

The collision occurred when a bus carrying approximately 35 pilgrims was hit head-on by a truck transporting gas cylinders, while en route to Deoghar for the ritual water offering.
Witnesses described the crash as devastating.
The force of the collision tore through the bus, trapping many passengers and sending emergency teams scrambling to the scene.
Rescue efforts were swift, with police, ambulances, and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) rushing in to help free those trapped and transport the injured to Deoghar Sadar Hospital and nearby primary health centres.
Officials confirmed that several survivors remain in critical condition. Authorities are in the process of identifying the deceased.
Post-mortems are underway, and district officials have visited both the accident site and hospitals to oversee operations.
A crane was brought in to clear the debris. Preliminary investigations have started, focusing on possible driver negligence as a cause of the crash.
