In Kolar district, police announced on Monday that a man had been detained for allegedly killing his 19-year-old daughter by strangling her to death because of her relationship with a member of a scheduled tribe. They added that this was a case of hate crime.

Father accused

After the victim’s body was exhumed on August 27 in front of Kolara tehsildar Harshawardhan and sent for an autopsy report, the arrest happened. The accused, Venkatesh Gowda, is the victim’s father, and Ramya is the victim, according to the police.

Ramya, a member of the Vokkaliga group, was dating a young man from the ST Nayak neighbourhood. Despite her father’s attempts to discourage her from continuing the connection, the couple dated for more than three years, according to the police.

Around 2:30 p.m. on August 25, Venkatesh Gowda interrupted Ramya’s phone call with her partner with information about an arranged marriage. Ramya firmly disagreed with the proposal and challenged her relatives. According to investigators, her father strangled her by putting his foot against her neck as the argument heated up.

Secret burial

Ramya’s body was secretly buried when she passed away with the assistance of family members and friends, including Chaude Gowda, Mohan Gowda, and Anjaneyareddy, the sister-in-law of Venkatesh Gowda.

However, the police were informed after locals started to become suspicious. A covert investigation was started to find out what happened, and after that, a FIR was filed, which resulted in the arrest of four people—including Gowda—along with alleged murderous accomplices.

Kolara Rural Police Inspector B Lokesh said, “We received a tip from a villager about the occurrence, and shortly we brought the primary culprit, Venkatesh Gowda, to the police station. He said that he confessed to the crime when being questioned by us about the disappearance of his daughter Ramya. Lokesh continued, “We have charged him and three others under Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code.
