Congress releases candidates list for Jammu and Kashmir elections

The National Conference (NC) president Farooq Abdullah announced an alliance with Congress to contest all 90 assembly seats in Jammu and Kashmir. Elections will be held in three phases starting September 18.

Farooq Abdullah confirmed the tie-up following talks with Congress leaders in Srinagar. He stated that the alliance aims to counter “divisive forces” in the country.

Earlier, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi met with Farooq Abdullah and NC vice-president Omar Abdullah at their Gupkar Road residence. Discussions have been ongoing, with local-level talks shaping the alliance.

An NC leader revealed that the parties held three rounds of discussions on seat-sharing. In the recent Lok Sabha elections, the two parties contested together as part of the INDIA bloc but faced losses. Congress lost both seats in Jammu, while NC lost one out of three seats in the Kashmir Valley.

Jammu and Kashmir’s assembly elections will take place in three phases on September 18, 25, and October 1. Vote counting is scheduled for October 4.
