Crop loss due to scarcity of rain compelled a farmer to commit suicide. The tragic incident took place in Chikkamagaluru district in Karnataka. Farmer Krishna Naik, a resident of Lingadahalli in Kadur taluk, hanged himself in his home.

Naik took a loan of Rs 3 lakhs to sow ragi and jowar crops. However, the crops failed due to the scarcity of rain which compelled Naik to terminate his life. This is the fifth instance a farmer committing suicide in the last 40 days from that very same place.
Police have taken up the case and are investigating the matter. Kadur taluk in Chikkamagaluru district has been declared as drought hit by the district. With the number of suicides being increased gradually helpline numbers have been opened for the farmers. A total of 1219 farmers have committed suicide in the last 18 months in Karnataka due to the very same reason – crop failure.
Karnataka state government has already declared 194 taluks among 236 as drought-prone in the state and sought a relief package of Rs 4,860 crores from the centre.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has said that currently the central study team is in the state and are reviewing the conditions of those drought hit 11 districts.
A total of Rs 30,000 crore has been lost due to crop failure.
