The parents of the junior doctor who was brutally rape and murder at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata have expressed their disillusionment with West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. They criticized the handling of the case by the authorities and questioned the Chief Minister’s commitment to justice.
In an exclusive interview with NDTV, the victim’s father voiced his frustration, stating, “I once had complete faith in Mamata Banerjee, but not anymore. She claims to seek justice, but her actions do not reflect that. The police are not addressing the core issues and are instead targeting the public that demands justice.”

The victim’s father’s comments came amid growing public unrest. On Sunday, tensions flared when fans of rival football clubs Mohun Bagan and East Bengal, who had gathered to protest the R.G. Kar incident outside the Salt Lake Stadium, faced a lathi-charge by police. The protest trigger by the cancellation of a Durand Cup Derby between the clubs due to security concerns.
The victim’s father further acknowledged some progress in the case, noting that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which took over the investigation from the Calcutta High Court on Tuesday, appears to be making an effort. He mentioned providing the CBI with a page from his daughter’s diary but withheld details about its contents.
Addressing the people of Bengal, he advised caution regarding state government schemes: “All of Mamata Banerjee’s schemes like ‘Kanyashree’ and ‘Lakshmir Bhandar’ are superficial. Before availing these benefits, ensure your Lakshmi at home is safe.”
About the Case
The body of the junior doctor discover in the seminar hall of R.G. Kar Medical College on August 9. Sanjoy Roy, a civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police stationed at the hospital, has been arrested as the prime suspect based on CCTV footage. Although Roy reportedly confessed to the crime, there is widespread belief that the rape and murder could not have been committed by one person alone.
The victim’s father criticized the authorities for failing to ensure his daughter’s safety. He expressed the deep concern of parents who feel vulnerable when their children are at their workplace, saying, “As parents, we worry when our child is on the road, but we felt a sense of relief once she was inside the workplace gate.”
Moreover, in response to the case, the Supreme Court has taken suo motu cognizance. A three-judge bench led by Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud will hear the matter titled “Alleged rape and murder incident of a trainee doctor in R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata, and related issues” on Tuesday. The bench includes Justice J.B. Pardiwala and Justice Manoj Misra.
