Explosive Discovery: 54 Detonators Uncovered at Kalyan Railway Station

Officials from the Government Railway Police (GRP) made a concerning discovery on Wednesday at Kalyan railway station, uncovering more than 50 detonators left abandoned in two boxes on platform number one. The incident, which occurred around 11:30 am, prompted immediate action from GRP personnel upon noticing the unattended boxes in the bustling station along the Central Railway (CR) route. Subsequently, a dog squad and the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS) were summoned to assess the situation.

Detonators, small sensitive devices utilized to trigger larger explosions, are commonly employed in commercial mining, excavation, and demolition activities. Upon examination by the BDDS team, the boxes were found to contain a total of 54 detonators.

Although the Kalyan GRP has initiated an investigation, no formal case has been registered in connection with the seizure as of yet. Senior police officials, including representatives from the Thane city police, visited the site where the detonators were discovered.

Efforts to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the abandoned boxes are ongoing, with authorities scrutinizing CCTV footage to determine the individuals responsible for their placement on the platform. DCP Manoj Patil emphasized that while the seized detonators were not coupled with explosives and posed no immediate threat, investigations are underway to identify the individuals involved in transporting them to the railway station.

Located on the outskirts of Mumbai, Kalyan railway station serves as a crucial transit hub for both long-distance and suburban train commuters, experiencing significant foot traffic on a daily basis.
