‘Exercise Devil Strike’ Drill, North Bengal; Showcases Collaboration Between Army and IAF

The recent military training operation, named ‘Exercise Devil Strike,’ took place in North Bengal from January 22 to 27, showcasing the collaboration between the Army and the Indian Air Force (IAF). The exercise involved more than 1000 paratroopers from the Eastern Command, joined by IAF’s GARUDs, and featured a diverse array of aircraft, including Rafale, C-130 Hercules, AN-32, and indigenous ALH helicopters.

Emphasizing the synergy between the Army and the IAF, the training drills focused on their integrated approach in navigating a battlefield amid challenging electronic warfare conditions. The primary objective was to execute tasks typically handled by an airborne force, such as the aerial deployment of troops, heavy armaments, equipment, and logistical support. Additionally, the operation aimed at neutralizing High-Value Targets (HVTs), coordinating with advancing ground units, and conducting extraction operations.

The deployment of heavy weaponry and equipment utilized the state-of-the-art Guided Precision Aerial Delivery System (GPADS). Troops then engaged in drills to eliminate or neutralize targets through direct action, with support from fighter aircraft and attack helicopters guided by ground-based para troopers using Laser Target Designators.

The inclusion of Remotely Piloted Vehicles played a crucial role in performing Post-Strike Damage Assessment (PSDA) and facilitating re-engagement wherever necessary during the action.

The exercise commenced with the aerial insertion of specialized troops securing an airhead within enemy territory through Combat Free Fall (CFF). Subsequently, the main force was deployed via Static Line Jumps. After successfully accomplishing their mission objectives, para troopers seamlessly linked up with ground forces and practised extraction maneuvers.

Adding another layer of complexity to the multidimensional exercise, underwater diving teams executed a diversionary attack near the Teesta Barrage. The comprehensive nature of ‘Exercise Devil Strike’ showcased the military’s capabilities in executing coordinated and integrated operations across various domains.
