PM Narendra Modi urges voters to participate in record numbers as polling begins across Puducherry’s 30 Assembly constituencies.

Every Vote Matters: PM Narendra Modi Urges Record Turnout In Puducherry Polls

Voting began across Puducherry on Thursday, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi encouraging residents to take part actively in the democratic process.

Taking to X, PM Modi posted, “As the Puducherry Assembly elections commence, I urge every voter to come out and participate in record numbers. I especially appeal to our youth and to women voters to strengthen the process of democracy. Every vote matters in shaping the future of Puducherry.”

Polling is underway in all 30 Assembly constituencies, where roughly 9.5 lakh registered voters will determine the outcome for 294 candidates.

The contest promises a close fight, and several seats could come down to narrow margins.

The demand for full statehood has, however, emerged as a major campaign theme.

Chief Minister N Rangasamy and the AINRC–BJP-led alliance have maintained that working in step with the Union government enables more efficient administration and quicker delivery of development initiatives.

On the other side, the Congress–DMK alliance has, however, centred its campaign on questions of autonomy, pointing to ongoing friction with the Lieutenant Governor and arguing that local governance powers have been limited.

Economic issues have also featured prominently.

Plans to privatise the electricity department have led to public protests, with concerns raised over possible increases in tariffs.

While the ruling alliance has highlighted welfare measures such as subsidies and direct financial assistance, opposition parties have focused on job shortages, rising living costs, and the steady movement of young people to cities like Chennai and Bengaluru in search of employment.

New Entrants Add Uncertainty

The entry of actor-turned-politician Vijay has added uncertainty to the race, with his party expected to affect vote distribution in multiple constituencies.

Independent candidates and smaller parties are also in the fray, further splitting the vote and raising the possibility of a closely divided Assembly.

Key questions around governance, economic direction, and political status have come into focus, making the election significant for Puducherry’s future. Vote counting will take place on May 4.
