The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has intensified its investigation into alleged financial misconduct at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, focusing on properties acquired by former principal Sandip Ghosh and his wife, Sangeeta Ghosh. The probe follows the high-profile case involving the rape and murder of a junior doctor at the facility last month.
On September 6, ED officials conducted searches at seven locations, including the residences of Sandip Ghosh, his relatives, and associates. The searches aimed to uncover evidence related to the alleged misappropriation of funds at the state-run institution.

The ED reported that during the searches, officials seized “various incriminating documents, records related to properties acquired by Sandip and Sangeeta Ghosh, and digital devices.” The investigation revealed that Sangeeta Ghosh had acquired two properties without the necessary approvals from relevant authorities.
Sandip Ghosh’s Property
The ED is scrutinizing assets believed to be disproportionate to the couple’s reported income. This includes two residential flats near RG Kar Medical College, one flat in Murshidabad, and a luxurious multi-room farmhouse in South 24 Parganas district. Notably, some of these properties were acquired during Sandip Ghosh’s tenure as principal.
Both the ED and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) are conducting parallel investigations into the financial irregularities at RG Kar. The CBI monitors its investigation through the court, while the ED has initiated its probe with an Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR).
The ED has uncovered the involvement of several shell companies that allegedly secured tenders for medical equipment and infrastructure maintenance at RG Kar during Ghosh’s administration.
In a related development, a special court in Kolkata has remanded Sandip Ghosh and three others—Afsar Ali, Suman Hazra, and Biplab Sinha—to judicial custody until September 23. Ali, Ghosh’s personal bodyguard, along with Sinha and Hazra, vendors who supplied medical equipment to RG Kar during Ghosh’s tenure.
