Allegations of illegal encroachment and corruption surrounding the Epicuria Food Mall in South Delhi’s Nehru Place have triggered public outrage.
Viral videos circulating on social media reveal the chaotic state of the area, showing unregulated street vending and claims of bribery by officials.
Senior journalist Subodh Jain shared a video on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), showing disorganised street vendors occupying the footpaths and roads near the metro station and the mall.
Covered with umbrellas and tarpaulins, these stalls have blocked pedestrian movement and created an unsanitary environment with piles of garbage and foul odours.
Jain alleged that officials from the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), Delhi Police, and Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) are accepting bribes to allow these unauthorised vendors to operate. He claimed that lakhs of rupees are collected monthly from these vendors, lining the pockets of corrupt authorities.
Another viral video shows the aftermath of an alleged raid, with carts overturned and debris scattered. Locals said such actions only inconvenience the public, adding to their frustration.
One anonymous shopkeeper said, “This isn’t just about space. The filth here is dangerous. Garbage collects every day.”
Residents and traders have voiced strong resentment. The growing filth and encroachment have raised serious questions about urban management and public health risks.
Subodh Jain tagged the Prime Minister’s Office, Home Ministry, and Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor, urging immediate intervention. He noted that recent anti-encroachment drives by the MCD had offered some hope.
The Delhi High Court had earlier criticised Nehru Place’s poor state. In a 2021 hearing, it likened the area to a slum and called for a balance between street vendors’ rights and citizens’ safety.
So far, the MCD and Delhi Police have not issued any official statements. But with public pressure mounting and videos gaining traction online, an administrative investigation into the matter seems likely. This case may again draw attention to corruption and poor planning plaguing Delhi’s urban landscape.
