In a surprising turn of events mere weeks before the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, Election Commissioner Arun Goel has tendered his resignation, which has been duly accepted by the President. This resignation leaves the Election Commission of India with only Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar, exacerbating an existing vacancy within the commission.

The anticipated announcement of Lok Sabha election dates, expected next week, now faces uncertainty following Mr. Goel’s resignation. The sudden departure of a key member of the Election Commission raises questions about the commission’s capacity to adhere to its established timelines.

Mr. Goel, a seasoned 1985-batch IAS officer, had opted for voluntary retirement on November 18, 2022, before being swiftly appointed as Election Commissioner the following day. His appointment, however, was met with legal challenges, with the Supreme Court questioning the haste surrounding his selection process.
“Minister of Law picks up four names from the list of names shortlisted… The file was put up on November 18; moves the same day. Even PM recommends the name on the same day. We don’t want any confrontation, but was this done in any haste? What’s the tearing hurry,” the court had asked.
Dismissal of Legal Petition
Despite the legal scrutiny, a two-judge bench dismissed the petition last year, noting that a Constitution Bench had previously examined the matter and refused to annul Mr. Goel’s appointment.
