Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his campaign rally in Morena, Madhya Pradesh, on Thursday afternoon, criticized the Congress Party over the inheritance tax issue and reiterated contentious remarks regarding Muslims and the opposition’s alleged intentions to redistribute wealth to migrants.
His remarks came ahead of a significant move by the Election Commission in Delhi. The commission issued notices to BJP leader JP Nadda and Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge based on complaints by each party accusing Mr Modi and Rahul Gandhi of hate speech and violations of the Model Code of Conduct.
The Election Commission’s notices did not directly mention the PM, Mr Gandhi, or Mr Kharge regarding the alleged hate speeches. However, copies of the complaints were attached to the notices, and the commission, for the first time, held party leaders responsible for the speeches of their star campaigners.
In essence, the Election Commission urged Mr Nadda and Mr Kharge to ensure that BJP and Congress star campaigners adhere to guidelines promoting a higher standard of discourse.
During his speech in Morena, PM Modi alleged that the Congress aimed to reintroduce the inheritance tax abolished by Rajiv Gandhi. He claimed that Rajiv Gandhi did so to protect a significant portion of his mother, Indira Gandhi’s wealth, from being claimed by the government. PM Modi accused the Congress of now wanting to impose this tax on the people.
He further asserted that if Congress came to power, it would take over half of citizens’ earnings through inheritance tax. PM Modi also took a jab at senior Congress leader Sam Pitroda, alleging his support for imposing the inheritance tax.
PM Modi warned that the Congress aimed to seize people’s jewellery and savings by scrutinizing their properties and valuables. He referred to Rahul Gandhi’s recent statement about conducting a national caste survey, including an economic report, to address injustices.

These comments mirrored those made by PM Modi earlier in Banswara, Rajasthan, which led to the Congress’ complaint. He alleged that the Congress manifesto was influenced by the Muslim League and accused the party of favoring Muslims over others in asset distribution.
In Morena, PM Modi reiterated his claim about the Congress’ manifesto being influenced by the Muslim League, sparking a strong response from the Congress. Mr. Kharge countered, highlighting historical ties between the BJP and the Muslim League.
Overall, PM Modi’s speech in Morena highlighted his ongoing criticism of the Congress Party’s policies and strategies, particularly regarding wealth distribution and minority rights.
