Election Commission Completes Bihar SIR; 65 Lakh Names To Be Removed

A day before the Supreme Court hears pleas against the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in Bihar, the poll body on Sunday said it had completed the enumeration phase. The revision ran from 24 June to 25 July 2025.

Over 7.24 crore voters submitted their forms out of a total of 7.89 crore. The massive response showed strong public engagement.

The campaign aimed to include first-time voters, migrants, the elderly, and persons with disabilities.

65 Lakh Voters Out of the Draft Roll

The Commission said about 65 lakh names would be excluded from the draft roll to be published on 1 August. This includes 22 lakh deceased voters (2.83%), 36 lakh who shifted homes or not found (4.59%), and 7 lakh duplicate entries (0.89%).

All 12 major political parties took part. BLA appointments rose by 16%. CPI(M) led with a 1,083% jump in nominations. The BJP posted over 53,000 BLAs, followed by the RJD and JD(U).

Digital Push and Youth Drive

Voters submitted 29 lakh forms online. The Commission sent over 10.2 crore SMS messages. These included alerts and acknowledgements.

The Chief Electoral Officer worked with other states to reach Bihar’s migrant voters. The ECI urged all citizens turning 18 by 1 October 2025 to enrol from 1 to 30 August. Special drives will help ensure full inclusion.

Volunteers are helping seniors and PwD voters with paperwork. Draft rolls will be available online and offline. Voters can request changes during a one-month window. No name will be deleted without a formal order.

With large-scale mobilisation, digital tools, and cross-state support, the Bihar voter roll update sets a new benchmark for fair and inclusive elections.
