The Election Commission of India (ECI) will announce the schedule for the 70-member Delhi Assembly elections at 2 PM today. The press conference will be held in the Plenary Hall of Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi. The current Assembly’s term ends on February 23, requiring the election process to conclude before then.
On Monday, the ECI released a revised voter list showing a significant increase in Delhi’s electorate. The total number of voters now stands at 1,55,24,858, an addition of 1,67,329 since October 2024. The Commission has warned against using false documents for voter registration.
Parties Announce Key Candidates
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has declared candidates for all 70 seats, with Arvind Kejriwal contesting from the New Delhi seat and Chief Minister Atishi running in Kalkaji. The BJP has fielded 29 candidates so far, including Pravesh Sahib Singh Verma from New Delhi and Ramesh Bidhuri in Kalkaji.
The Congress has announced 48 candidates. Sandeep Dikshit, son of former Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, will contest from New Delhi, taking on Kejriwal. Alka Lamba will represent Congress in Kalkaji.
High-Stakes Contests In Key Constituencies
The New Delhi seat is set for a high-stakes battle, with Kejriwal facing BJP’s Verma and Congress’ Dikshit. In Kalkaji, Chief Minister Atishi will go against BJP’s Ramesh Bidhuri and Congress’ Alka Lamba.
The announcement today will mark the official countdown to the Delhi Assembly elections, setting the stage for a keenly contested political battle.
