The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Monday announced biennial elections to eight Rajya Sabha seats in Tamil Nadu and Assam.

Voting will take place on June 19, and the results will be declared the same day.

Eight Seats To Fall Vacant

Two seats in Assam will fall vacant with the retirement of Mission Ranjan Das and Birendra Prasad Baishya on June 14.

Six seats in Tamil Nadu will become vacant as Anbumani Ramadoss, M Shanmugam, N Chandrasegharan, M Mohamed Abdulla, P Wilson, and Vaiko complete their terms on July 24.

The Commission will issue the election notification on June 2. Candidates must file nominations by June 9.

Officials will scrutinise the papers on June 10, and June 12 is the deadline for withdrawing names.

Strict Poll Protocols In Place

The Commission has mandated the use of violet sketch pens provided by the Returning Officer for voting.

Officials will reject votes marked with any other pen.

The ECI will appoint observers to monitor the process and enforce its Covid-19 guidelines where required.

Counting will begin as soon as polling ends on June 19. The entire process will conclude by June 23.

The ECI also announced bypolls to five Assembly constituencies in four states, scheduled for the same day.
