External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar welcomed Singapore’s Prime Minister Lawrence Wong in New Delhi on Thursday to discuss the strengthening of bilateral ties.

The meeting highlighted the deepening strategic relationship between India and Singapore, reflecting mutual commitment to enhanced cooperation across multiple sectors.

Jaishankar shared on social media, “Pleased to call on PM @LawrenceWongST of Singapore this morning in Delhi. Appreciate his constant encouragement for the strengthening of India-Singapore ties. Confident that his talks later today with PM @narendramodi will chart a roadmap for our contemporary ties.

The External Affairs Minister expressed confidence that Wong’s forthcoming talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi would map out a progressive roadmap for bilateral relations.

Wong is scheduled to hold bilateral discussions with PM Modi later in the day, underscoring the significance of this diplomatic visit.

After the meeting, Prime Minister Wong also commented on social media, “With India External Affairs Minister @DrSJaishankar — we discussed regional & global developments, and the good progress in India-SG cooperation.

PM Wong arrived in India on Tuesday for a three-day official visit, accompanied by his wife and a high-level delegation comprising cabinet ministers and senior officials.

This marks Wong’s first visit to India since taking office, reinforcing Singapore’s role as a vital partner in India’s foreign policy framework.

Engagements Across Key Sectors

During his visit, Wong has already held meetings with Union Health Minister JP Nadda and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, focusing on collaboration in the health and finance sectors.

During the visit, both nations will sign several high-level agreements covering finance, digital innovation, skill development, civil aviation, maritime cooperation, and space technology.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) highlighted Singapore’s strategic importance in India’s ‘Act East’ Policy, noting that PM Modi elevated bilateral relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership during his visit to Singapore in September 2024.

Wong’s visit coincides with the 60th anniversary of diplomatic ties between India and Singapore, celebrating decades of robust partnership.

The MEA highlighted that the visit provides an opportunity for both Prime Ministers to review multifaceted cooperation and set the course for future collaboration.

“The two Prime Ministers will also engage on regional and international issues of mutual interest,” the MEA added, signalling a shared commitment to address global challenges through strengthened dialogue.

The meeting between EAM Jaishankar and PM Wong reinforces the strong foundation of India-Singapore relations, paving the way for closer strategic and economic collaboration.

Upcoming agreements and bilateral discussions will expand the partnership, benefiting both nations and boosting regional stability and prosperity.
