Kolkata Police arrested a civic volunteer, Gangasagar Golde, on Saturday for allegedly hitting a protesting student with his motorcycle while under the influence of alcohol. The incident occurred on Friday evening during a protest against the rape and murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College & Hospital.
As the students gathered on BT Road in northern Kolkata to express their outrage, Golde, in an inebriated state, allegedly struck one of the protesters with his bike. Immediately after the incident, the protesters surrounded Golde and confronted him.
Initially, Golde attempted to argue with the protesters but soon switched to apologizing, as seen in a viral video of the incident. Despite his apologies, the protesters refused to let him go. “We have been pardoning for a long time, and that has led to the current situation,” one protester remarked in the video.

A traffic sergeant, Tarakeswar Puri, arrived at the scene to intervene but was drawn into a verbal confrontation with the protesters. The situation escalated, prompting the students to block the busy BT Road from early Saturday morning. Their protest persisted until 9:30 A.M., only ending after news of Golde’s arrest surfaced.
The incident has drawn further attention as Sanjay Roy, the sole accused in the RG Kar rape and murder case, was also a civic volunteer with Kolkata Police.
West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose has since issued a statement, emphasizing his commitment to addressing the concerns of the victim’s family. “After receiving a heart-wrenching letter from the victim’s parents, I rushed to Delhi and presented their grievances to the Home Minister,” Bose said, underlining the gravity of the situation and the public’s demand for justice.
