President Droupadi Murmu on Thursday expressed deep concern over the growing drug abuse crisis among Punjab’s youth and called for a durable, collective response.
Addressing the 50th golden jubilee convocation of Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) in Amritsar, she said the menace has become a serious social challenge in recent years.
The President stated that drug abuse harms not only physical health but also weakens the social, economic, and moral fabric of society.
She stressed that society must find a lasting solution to protect future generations and ensure long-term well-being.
Highlighting the role of education, President Murmu said universities like GNDU must actively guide misguided youth and channel their energy in positive directions.
She urged all stakeholders, teachers, administrators, and policymakers to take responsibility for shaping young minds.
She noted that the next two decades are critical for achieving the goal of Viksit Bharat by 2047.
According to her, today’s youth will drive progress across sectors and must act with responsibility, scientific temper, and social commitment.
Speaking in Hindi, the President described Punjab as an agrarian state with vast potential for research and innovation in agribusiness.
She appreciated GNDU’s focused efforts in this area and encouraged deeper engagement with rural and agricultural development.
President Murmu said Amritsar holds immense cultural and historical significance. She called it a privilege for students and teachers to learn and work in a city that symbolises India’s spiritual and freedom heritage.
During the convocation, the university awarded degrees and medals to 463 students, including undergraduates, postgraduates, and PhD scholars. GNDU also conferred honorary doctorates on Padma Shri awardee Vikramjit Singh Sawhney and Jasvir Gill.
The President recalled the teachings of Guru Nanak Dev Ji and said his ideals continue to guide humanity. She highlighted the principles of honest work, sharing, and compassion as solutions to many social problems.
She also underlined Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s advocacy for women’s equality.
Observing the strong presence of women among award recipients, she praised GNDU’s commitment to women’s empowerment.
President Murmu further advised students to view education as a tool for service, not just employment. She urged them to uplift those left behind and choose professions that strengthen the nation and uphold human values.
