While the Delhi Budget dominated headlines last Sunday, the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) quietly set its 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly election campaign in motion.

February 1 coincided with Maghi Purnima and Thaipusam, one of the most sacred festivals for Tamils, marked by large-scale temple worship, especially at Murugan shrines.

Thaipusam, rooted in Tamil mythology, commemorates the day Lord Murugan received divine weapons from Goddess Parvati to defeat the demon Surapadman. A public holiday in Tamil Nadu, the festival drew massive crowds this year, further amplified by it falling on a Sunday.

For a party that has long projected a rationalist and atheist ideological stance, the DMK’s choice of such an overtly religious and culturally charged day to launch its campaign is politically significant. It signals an attempt to align more closely with popular cultural sentiments at a time when electoral challenges are mounting.

Electoral Challenges Ahead

The DMK enters the 2026 elections facing visible anti-incumbency, renewed competition from the AIADMK, and the disruptive entry of actor Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). Both DMK and AIADMK have largely stabilised their alliance structures, with minor negotiations ongoing.

The DMK-led front is expected to remain intact, with Congress likely to continue as a key ally. Although not officially announced, talks led by Congress in-charge Girish Chodankar suggest the alliance is close to finalisation. Congress is reportedly seeking around 33 seats, though tensions persist in Puducherry over leadership claims.

Within Congress itself, a section has floated the idea of aligning with Vijay’s TVK, citing his perceived electoral appeal. Meanwhile, the BJP has secured alliances with PMK and TTV Dhinakaran, even as efforts to reunite AIADMK factions have faltered.

Vijay, after failing to attract alliance partners, has declared that TVK will contest all 234 seats independently. Many observers see his entry as a wildcard that could split votes, particularly among young and disenchanted voters.

As the 2026 polls draw closer, Tamil Nadu appears headed for a rare multi-cornered contest, breaking away from its traditional bipolar political pattern.
