On Monday, Dinesh Trivedi conveyed Prime Minister Modi’s greetings to the Bangladesh PM and expressed India’s intent to work positively and constructively with the Bangladesh government and its people.
The two sides discussed shared interests and ways to strengthen bilateral relations, with a focus on people-centric engagement.
Analysts have viewed the meetings as signalling a positive shift after a period of diplomatic strain between India and Bangladesh.
The cordial engagement indicates a willingness to move beyond recent irritants and focus on the broader bilateral relationship.
A report in Bangladesh’s Daily Sun noted that geography, history, trade, rivers, security and people-to-people ties continue to bind the two countries despite political disagreements.
Sheikh Hasina Row
The report highlighted reactions in Dhaka to former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s recent address to journalists in New Delhi.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs has maintained that the Indian government had no involvement in the virtual interaction and does not endorse remarks made during it, particularly those concerning Bangladesh’s duly constituted government.
The Daily Sun report said Dinesh Trivedi has adopted a conciliatory approach since assuming office, stressing mutual understanding to address bilateral challenges and expressing optimism about advancing ties. It also pointed to past instances where India and Bangladesh overcame difficult disputes through patience, negotiation and political engagement.
The report noted that Rahman’s invitation to visit India, including an invitation to attend the BRICS Summit in New Delhi in September, could provide another avenue for high-level engagement between the two countries.
