Devastating Fire Claims Six Lives In Kathua’s Shiv Nagar Area

A tragic fire broke out in the Shiv Nagar area of Kathua city on Wednesday, resulting in the deaths of six people, including two children. The victims, who were residing in a rented house, succumbed to suffocation caused by smoke inhalation, according to doctors at GMC Hospital, Kathua.

The deadly incident occurred at approximately 2:21 A.M. Emergency services immediately alerted fire department personnel and local police, who rushed to the scene. Despite their best efforts, they declared six individuals dead upon arrival at the hospital.

The victims were residents of a rented accommodation. Dr. Surinder Atri from GMC Hospital provided further details, saying, “This is an extremely tragic incident. Among the deceased are the husband of a retired Assistant Matron, their unmarried daughter, and two children from the brother’s family. The surviving family members, including another daughter, a son, and the rest of the brother’s family, are currently safe and out of danger.”

Fire Likely Caused By Lamp Or Stove

Initial reports suggest that the fire may have been triggered by a burning lamp or stove, which set the furniture and other household items ablaze. The flames spread quickly, filling the room with dense smoke. The suffocating smoke, rather than burns, led to the fatalities, as no significant burn marks found on the victims.

Dr. Atri further explained, “The victims were asleep in a single room when the fire broke out. This is an enormous loss for the family, and their grief is unimaginable.”

Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the fire. They are working to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident to ensure accountability and to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
