Delhi High Court Orders Concrete Steps for Tihar Lake Redevelopment Within 6 Weeks

The Delhi High Court presided over by Acting Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Manmeet Pritam Singh Arora, has issued a directive to the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) Vice Chairman to initiate necessary measures within six weeks for the revitalization of Tihar Lake, situated adjacent to Tihar Jail. This directive comes in response to a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by advocate Sunil.

Advocate Sunil brought to the bench’s attention the deteriorating condition of Tihar Lake, highlighting that the initial development undertaken by DDA, funded from the government’s coffers, has since languished into neglect. Despite numerous announcements promising its rejuvenation, tangible steps towards restoration have been lacking.

Sunil underscored the absence of essential amenities in Woodland Park, adjacent to the lake, noting the dearth of potable water, inadequate sanitation facilities with only one poorly maintained toilet, and the neglect of park greenery due to the absence of horticulture department personnel. Additionally, the park’s security vacuum has made it a hotspot for drug abuse, raising concerns for public safety.

The petitioner emphasized the necessity of clean air, a conducive environment, and accessible public spaces for the nearby residents. Despite submitting a memorandum to the DDA Vice Chairman on April 8, urging action for the lake’s restoration, no response has been forthcoming.

In light of these grievances, the petitioner sought the court’s intervention to mandate the DDA and Delhi government to expedite the redevelopment of Tihar Lake and ensure the provision of basic facilities such as drinking water, security personnel, and horticultural maintenance. Furthermore, the petitioner urged for police intervention to address antisocial activities within the park premises.

The court’s directive serves as a beacon of hope for the restoration of Tihar Lake and the surrounding area, promising a renewed focus on public welfare and environmental conservation.
