The Delhi High Court has directed Delhi University to admit 18 out of 19 students whose admissions were halted at St. Stephen’s College under the Christian quota. The court’s decision comes during a hearing of a petition from St. Stephen’s College.
Court’s Ruling on Minority Rights
Justice Swarn Kanta Sharma stated that while 18 students are entitled to admission, one student’s enrollment exceeds the permitted 5 percent allocation. The judge emphasized that the right of minorities to run educational institutions is not absolute. Even aided minority institutions must adhere to government regulations. The college cannot claim unrestricted authority in matters governed by established rules.
College’s Argument and University Response
St. Stephen’s College contended it submitted the list of selected Christian candidates to Delhi University by August 24. However, the university did not activate its fee portal for these candidates to complete their admission process. Additionally, DU failed to upload the candidates’ names on its Common Seat Allocation System (CSAS) portal. The court’s ruling aims to resolve the admission deadlock and uphold the rights of eligible students.
