New Delhi, Aug 29: The Delhi High Court has issued a notice to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in response to Sadia Anwar Sheikh’s appeal challenging her UAPA conviction. Justices Pratibha M Singh and Amit Sharma instructed the NIA to submit a counter affidavit two days before the next hearing.
Appeal Against Conviction
Sadia Anwar Sheikh, represented by advocate Rajat Kumar, appealed against her conviction from May 6, 2024. Sheikh received a seven-year prison sentence for offenses under Sections 38 and 39 of UAPA. She was convicted with four others for anti-national activities and connections with the Islamic State Khorasan Province (ISKP), a faction of the banned ISIS. Sheikh had pleaded guilty and faced conviction on April 18, 2024.
Next Steps in the Case
Section 38 of UAPA concerns membership in a terrorist organization, and Section 39 deals with supporting terrorist organizations. The special NIA court also convicted Abdullah Basith, Jahanzaib Sami, Heena Bashir Beg, and Nabeel Siddique alongside Sheikh. The court will hear the case again on September 11, including four other appeals from the convicted individuals. Sheikh is originally from Pune district in Maharashtra.
