Delhi High Court Directs Implementation of Committee Recommendations for Streamlining Medical Facilities in Government Hospitals

The Delhi High Court has issued directives to the Chief Secretary of the Delhi Government to ensure the implementation of recommendations put forth by a seven-member committee aimed at enhancing the provision of free medical facilities under government schemes across the capital’s hospitals. The bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Manmohan Singh and Justice Manmeet Pritam Singh Arora has instructed the Chief Secretary to conduct monthly meetings until all recommendations are fully executed, with an action report due by October 15. The hearing has been adjourned to October 22.

The committee, tasked with streamlining medical services, has proposed several measures to improve patient care. It suggests upgrading the websites of all government hospitals in Delhi to dynamic platforms with real-time updates on available medicines, implants, and equipment, either with the assistance of the National Informatics Centre (NIC) or selected vendors. Additionally, it recommends displaying lists of medicines, transplants, and equipment on electronic screens on departmental websites to keep patients informed about hospital resources. The appointment of nodal officers in central and Delhi government hospitals, AIIMS, corporation hospitals, and autonomous hospitals is advised to facilitate patient access to financial assistance schemes.

Furthermore, the committee advocates for the implementation or extension of a single-window system in all hospitals to streamline patient services.

The bench has endorsed the committee’s recommendations and tasked the Chief Secretary with overseeing their implementation. Notably, last year, the court established the committee with the objective of enhancing the system for providing financial assistance to patients.

These directives mark a significant step towards enhancing the efficiency and accessibility of healthcare services in Delhi’s government hospitals, ultimately aiming to provide better support and care to patients in need.
