Delhi HC Seeks Report From Tihar Jail On Medical Condition Of Arun Ramachandra Pillai

The Delhi High Court has sought a report from the Tihar Jail Superintendent regarding the medical condition of Arun Ramachandra Pillai. Pillai is currently incarcerated on charges of money laundering related to the Delhi liquor policy case. The court, in response to Pillai’s interim bail plea on medical grounds, asked authorities for information.

Justice Amit Sharma instructed for medical report and treatment updates of Pillai from the concerned jail superintendent. The matter has been scheduled for further hearing on June 14. The court ordering a copy of the order to be sent to the jail superintendent for necessary compliance.

Meanwhile, the ED’s counsel informed the court that they had submitted their reply. However, the reply is yet to be placed on record. The court directed that the reply be formally included in the records before the next hearing date.

Earlier, the High Court had instructed the Enforcement Directorate to verify the medical reports provided by Pillai. Hyderabad-based businessman Arun Ramachandra Pillai was arrested by the ED in March last year. Pillai has requested interim bail for eight weeks citing medical reasons, including back pain.

He claims that doctors at an Ayurvedic clinic in Kerala have advised him to undergo 21 days of ‘panchakarma therapy’. He further maintained that the therapy is to be followed by 21 days of bed rest.

Pillai’s arrest by the ED in March 2023 stemmed from allegations that he represented the South Group during meetings with other accused individuals when the 2021 excise policy was devised and executed. The South Group is purportedly a consortium of liquor barons and politicians accused of paying bribes totalling Rs 100 crore to benefit the ruling AAP government.
