Delhi HC Seeks CBI’s Response On Chidambaram’s Plea For Document Inspection In INX Media Case

The Delhi High Court has asked the CBI to respond to P Chidambaram’s plea. He is seeking an adjournment of arguments in the INX Media case. Chidambaram argues that, if the CBI claims the investigation is complete, the accused should inspect documents that were withheld but not used. The CBI opposes this request.

Justice Manoj Kumar Ohri heard the arguments and set the next hearing for November 29.

Chidambaram Challenges Court’s Decision

Chidambaram filed the plea to challenge the trial court’s order of October 26, 2024. The trial court had dismissed his request to clarify his right to inspect unrelied documents. He referred to a March 2021 order in the INX Media case.

The petition states that the CBI’s status report from January 12, 2024, says the investigation is complete on other aspects. The CBI, however, cannot confirm whether reports from the UK, Switzerland, and Singapore can be included in the chargesheet as relied-upon or unrelied documents.

CBI to Correlate Reports

The CBI says it will decide after correlating the reports with the pending Letters Rogatory (LRs).

In 2022, the Delhi High Court had dismissed the CBI’s plea. The plea challenged a trial court order that allowed the accused, including Chidambaram, to inspect documents stored in the “maulana room.”

The CBI filed the case on May 15, 2017, alleging irregularities in the FIPB approval given to INX Media for receiving Rs 305 crore in foreign funds during Chidambaram’s tenure as Finance Minister.
