Petition Challenges Demolitions in Sheetla Mata Market
The Delhi High Court has issued a notice to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and the Delhi Police, requesting a response within two weeks regarding a petition against the demolition of vendors’ shops. The petition, filed by 45 vendors, challenges the destruction of their semi-permanent shops in Sheetla Mata Market, Madangir. Justices Vibhu Bakhru and Sachin Dutta will hear the case next on October 14.
The petitioners claim they have operated in the market for years and faced demolition of their units on July 30, allegedly without due process. Advocate Sanjay Bainiwal, representing the vendors, argued that the authorities violated the Street Vendors (Livelihood Protection and Regulation of Street Vending) Act, which requires a 30-day notice before any eviction or demolition actions.
Call for Restoration and Interim Relief
The petitioners have requested the court to order the re-establishment of their vending units at their original locations. They also submitted a memorandum to the authorities in August, seeking restoration of their businesses. As an interim measure, the vendors urge the court to prevent the MCD and police from hindering their vending activities in the market.
