The Delhi High Court on Tuesday granted bail to Olympian wrestler Sushil Kumar, the prime accused in the murder case of junior national wrestling champion Sagar Dhankar.
Justice Sanjeev Narula approved bail with conditions, requiring a bond of ₹50,000 and two sureties of the same amount. Sushil Kumar has been in judicial custody since June 2, 2021.
Sushil Kumar and his associates allegedly assaulted Sagar Dhankar and his two friends on May 4, 2021, in the Chhatrasal Stadium parking lot over a property dispute. Dhankar later succumbed to injuries, with the post-mortem report citing cerebral damage due to blunt force impact.
After being on the run for 18 days, Sushil Kumar was arrested in Delhi’s Mundka area while attempting to collect cash and borrow a vehicle. The Delhi Police called him the “kingpin” of the murder conspiracy. In October 2022, the trial court framed charges against him and 17 others under murder, rioting, and criminal conspiracy provisions of the IPC.
Sushil Kumar’s Career And Legal Battles
A two-time Olympic medalist, Sushil Kumar won bronze in the 2008 Beijing Olympics and silver in the 2012 London Olympics. Following his arrest, he was suspended from his Railways job.
He had earlier received interim bail for his father’s last rites and a medical procedure. With the trial still ongoing, his future remains uncertain.
