The Delhi High Court has allowed Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal to hold two additional online meetings with his lawyers every week while in jail. Previously, he was permitted to meet his lawyers only twice a week. Justice Neena Bansal Krishna issued this order after hearing Kejriwal’s petition.
The court, in allowing the extra meetings, emphasized the necessity of respecting his fundamental right to a fair hearing and effective legal representation. Kejriwal’s lawyer requested the additional meetings, citing the 35 cases against him across the country.
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the jail administration opposed this relief, arguing that jail rules should apply equally to all prisoners and that Kejriwal should not receive special treatment. The CBI arrested Kejriwal on June 26 from Tihar Jail, where he was in judicial custody in an ED case. The ED had arrested him on March 21.
